Can I fix my own window shade?

Yes. It takes time, patience, a few materials and maybe some special tools. You supply the time and patience.

Is it cheaper to get my shade repaired than replaced?

Yes. Unless the fabric is damaged, it is always cheaper and usually faster to get a Day/Night shade re strung rather than replace it.

Where can I get my shade repaired?

Most shade manufacturers will repair your shade at a very reasonable cost but it may take a couple of weeks including the shipping time. You must be prepared to remove and reinstall the shade. There are also some shops that are qualified to repair shades. We at A to Z Window Fashions offer an on site service if we are currently in your area or Contact us to arrange to have your Window Shades shipped directly to us for repair.

How do I know if a shop is qualified to repair my shade?

Many people can just replace a cord but that doesn't always make a good repair job. A key question to ask is: Do you have the ability to replace a grommet if necessary? You might also ask if they have parts such as springs, end caps and various cord colors.

Where can I get parts?

A To Z Window Fashions has an expanding line of parts for sale. We specialize in pleated shades and mini blinds for Recreational Vehicles. Parts can also be obtained directly from major shade manufacturers such as Hunter Douglas or Graber.

How do I know who made my window shade?

There is usually a label or decal on the shade. In many cases it is located on the bottom of the bottom rail usually at one end of the rail. The other common location is in the top rail.

How do I remove my window shade?

Look at the top rail that is typically under a valance. There is no standard in the industry so your shade may use mounting brackets, screws or a combination or the two. See a more detailed discussion on this subject and Download any of our Instructions & Help Files online, Instructions & Help Files

How much cord do I need?

A to Z Window Fashions have repair kits with 25', 50' and 100' of cord. Look at the shade and count the vertical cords. I have never used more than 25' of cord on a 2 cord shade. Add the height and width of a 4 cord shade and a 50' repair kit will restring a shade up to a total of about 90" - 95". The 100' repair kits will restring the largest 4 cord shades or multiple smaller shades. When we restring day/night shades, we at A to Z Window Fashions replace all of the cords rather than just the broken cord.

Why are my day/night shades hard to open and close?

The strings are too short putting too much tension on the spring(s) in the top rail. Another cause may be that the cord is failing. The cord has 2 plies and when the outer cord ply deteriorates, it bunches up and the rails cannot run over these spots smoothly.

How do I adjust the shade tension?

Adjust the cord length to change the tension. Longer cords mean less tension and easier shade operation. Conversely, shorter cords mean more tension and harder shade operation. Cord length can be changed by retying the knot at the tension buttons or moving the tension buttons up or down.

What is the proper shade tension?

Proper tension will allow the top section of the shade to stay in place when the lower section is raised and lowered.

What is the proper procedure to operate a Day/Night shade?

While it is possible to raise or lower both halves of the shade at the same time, it is not recommended because it accelerates wear and tear. We suggest that the bottom rail be lowered first and then lower the center rail. Reverse the procedure when raising the shade. Be sure to use two hands evenly spaced whenever possible. If it is necessary to use one hand, work from as close to center as possible. There are no Maintenance Free window shades. Treat them gently like you would a Loved One and you will minimize the maintenance.

Should we travel with the shades up or down?

The shade manufacturers generally recommend that you travel with the shades up but I suspect that is because they make less noise in motor homes in that position. We travel with a 5th wheel RV so our shades are frequently down when we travel, especially on the sunny side of the coach.

What position should the shades be in when the RV is stored?

The pleats have a memory and will lose this memory when stored or left down for long periods of time. Loss of memory will make the shade, especially the night half, difficult to close. Heavier fabrics will have more problems faster. We recommend that at least the night fabric be raised all the way to the top on a regular basis. Never store your RV with the shades down.

Our shades are dirty. Can they be cleaned or will we have to buy new ones?

They can be cleaned. You can spot clean using a mild cleaner such as Cold Water Wool Wash. Be sure the cleaner is clear in color and use a white cloth. Be gentle! A to Z Window Fashions cleans complete shades with a wet process that requires the shades be removed, cleaned and reinstalled. This is a good opportunity to inspect the shades, make any necessary repairs and reinstall them with the proper tension. Be sure that the company you hire is capable of doing all of these phases of the job.

We need to replace a shade in our RV. Where can we purchase a new shade?

If your RV is not older than about 3 years, your dealer may be able to get a matching shade from the manufacturer of your RV. Some RV service companies can order from a catalog but they are generally very limited in fabrics and colors. Ordering from A To Z Window Fashions gives you many options because we are a dealer for all of the major window shade manufacturers supplying the RV industry.

What causes our Day/Night shade to go up uneven?

Improper tension adjustment is the most common cause. This problem can also be caused by operating the shade from only one side.

What causes the day fabric to tear?

If the tear is at either end of the center rail, an end cap has come out allowing the inner rail to slide sideways. Replacing the end cap will prevent further damage. Sometimes a tear occurs at the holes in the fabric when a grommet has come out or the cord cuts through the grommet and part of the plastic inner rail. Either problem can be repaired but the job is best completed by a professional shop.
